The 75th anniversary of Indian Independence Day was celebrated with a flag-raising ceremony on Monday, 15th August at 9 am, outside the Guildhall on St Giles’ Square in Northampton.

 

The Chairman of West Northamptonshire Council, the Mayor of Northampton, and representatives of the Northampton Indian-Hindu Welfare Organisation were joined by Deputy Lieutenant of Northamptonshire, Professor Simon Gregory, and Neelam Aggarwal-Singh MBE to raise the Indian flag and commemorate the proclamation of Indian independence from the United Kingdom on 15 August 1947.

 

Councillor André González De Savage, the Chairman of West Northamptonshire Council, had expressed pride in marking this significant anniversary in Indian history and had extended an invitation to all to join in observing the flag-raising ceremony and celebrating India's heritage.

 

Independence Day had been celebrated on 15 August each year as a national holiday in India, commemorating the nation's independence with flag-raising ceremonies, parades, and cultural events.

 

Mrs. Aggarwal-Singh, also the Chair of the Northampton Indian Hindu Welfare Organisation, had expressed delight in the flag-raising event being held in West Northamptonshire for the first time. She had emphasized the significance of this moment for the community and had highlighted it as a time for celebration. This occasion had marked the first-ever raising of the Indian flag in Northampton to commemorate the country’s Independence Day, symbolizing a momentous occasion for the Indian community in the region.
